Store Redesign: Melao Bakery

In Elements and Principles of Design, students redesigned a storefront to amplify the brand’s story, culture, and presence. Through materials, color, and spatial layout, the project transformed the facade into an immersive narrative that invites visitors to connect with the brand before even stepping inside.

Understanding Melao Bakery

Melao Bakery was founded by Janira Torres and Eduardo Colón, who opened their first location in Kissimmee in 2008 after moving from Puerto Rico. Built on hard work and dedication, the family often slept in foldable beds inside the restaurant to keep it running, persevering even when the local community was small and the bakery wasn’t immediately popular. In 2015, they expanded to Orlando, bringing their Puerto Rican pastries and cuisine to a wider audience. Melao is a concept born from the heart, motivated by faith and a commitment to the community, aiming to offer more than food, an experience that nourishes both the palate and the soul. I chose to redesign Melao because it is close to me and deeply connected to my culture. The bakery is already a beloved community hub, hosting events and bringing people together. My goal is to reimagine the storefront so it evokes the warmth and spirit of the island, strengthening its role as both a cultural landmark and a gathering place.

A Homage to Puerto Rico

Melao Bakery is more than just a bakery; it's a cultural hub that brings people together through the warmth of Puerto Rican hospitality. The redesigned exterior will highlight the essence of Puerto Rican heritage with vibrant colors, iconic flags, and welcoming arches that draw the community in. The space will be designed to foster connection, from outdoor seating areas that encourage gathering to a lively ambiance that reflects the island’s spirit. By merging traditional aesthetics with modern functionality, Melao Bakery will become a landmark where culture, food, and community thrive.

In the Details…

The redesigned storefront celebrates Puerto Rican identity through thoughtful symbolic elements. The Puerto Rican flag, displayed in its original colors, stands as a vibrant representation of the island’s history and freedom. Outdoor tables and astroturf extend the experience beyond the interior, inviting gathering, play, and connection within the community. Fence posts draw inspiration from the historic Castillo San Felipe del Morro in Old San Juan, grounding the space in cultural memory and architectural heritage. The brand’s slogan, “Siempre Dulce, Siempre Caliente, Siempre Fresco,” is illuminated and prominently displayed, reinforcing Melao’s commitment to quality and tradition. A small stage further transforms the storefront into a cultural hub, encouraging local artist involvement and strengthening its role as a space for celebration, creativity, and shared experience.
