Nurture: Children’s Wellness Center
In Environmental Wayfinding, students were tasked with redesigning a children’s wellness center, with a focus on how light can shape emotion and encourage interaction. Guided by a “Light As” prompt, this project explores light as both a guide and a healer, using it to create an environment that supports navigation, comfort, and emotional well-being.
Inspirations & Concept Statement
Nurture Children’s Wellness Center is designed around the concept of Light as a Guide and Healing, where light leads children and their families through a gentle journey of exploration, comfort, and restoration. Embedded LED lighting forms subtle paths and flowing waves within the architecture, guiding movement through winding trails that make the space feel expansive and encourage curiosity.
The experience unfolds like a walk through nature, with moments of play and discovery, such as the lookout tower and interactive koi pond, balanced by quieter spaces for reflection, including a butterfly garden and a calm meditation pond. Throughout Nurture, light softly directs visitors from activity toward stillness, creating an environment that supports emotional healing, imagination, and a sense of peace.

Experience Walkthrough
The garden feels calm and still, with soft bands of light clearly guiding the path forward. The lighting creates a gentle visual trail along the ground and walls, helping Mom and me easily understand where to go while keeping the atmosphere peaceful and welcoming. As I move inside, the glow softens in places and shifts slightly warmer, encouraging me to slow down and explore. The space feels wide but comforting, like being inside a calm picture where I can pause, look around, and breathe more easily. Nothing feels rushed or overwhelming; instead, the light surrounds me in a quiet, supportive way, making the whole place feel gentle and healing.

Light map
The process begins with mapping the entire space, identifying key structures and interactive moments. This stage considers how these elements influence emotion while ensuring they support intuitive navigation, guiding children through the environment.
Sculpting the Arrival: Outdoor Garden
The outdoor garden lighting at Nurture creates a calm arrival experience that gently guides children and their families from the car toward the entrance. Wavy lines of light trace the pathways and highlight trees, structures, and interactive areas, encouraging exploration while still clearly revealing the direction of travel. The lighting remains soft and welcoming rather than bright, helping the garden feel peaceful and safe. As guests walk through the space, the light gradually leads them toward the building, easing the transition into a place meant for healing and comfort.
The intention of the lighting is to create clear wayfinding while maintaining a calm, child-friendly atmosphere. All exterior lighting is done with LED strips integrated into paths and architectural elements to highlight movement and key features without creating harsh brightness. The needs include safety, visibility, and intuitive navigation, while the goals are to lower stress and encourage curiosity. Because lighting is limited to LED strips and must remain gentle, strategies focus on illumination that guides the eye, highlighting surfaces so the light acts like rays of sunlight, guiding children forward.

Creating Warmth: Inspiration Hall
In Inspiration Hall, light gently embraces each child, wrapping the space in a warm, comforting glow. Softly illuminated walls, adorned with playful animal depictions, spark curiosity and imagination while creating a sense of peace. Skylights bring in natural light, the Koi pond adds a quiet rhythm, and hanging plants sway above, making the caregiver’s relaxation area feel calm and restorative. Rain on the skylights becomes a gentle white noise, adding a sensory layer of comfort and grounding.
Light guides children on a journey of exploration and wonder, helping them feel seen for who they are, not just for their illness. LED strips highlight pathways, interactive areas, and architectural features without overpowering the space, encouraging imaginative play and mindful observation. Every lighting choice is meant to inspire curiosity, promote calm, and support both children and caregivers in feeling safe, welcome, and inspired throughout the hall.

Calm in Stillness: Quiet Room
In the Quiet Sensory Room, light gently embraces the space like a nighttime forest. Fiber optic “fireflies” sparkle along the walls, lanterns hang from a central tree structure, and softly glowing stepping stones guide movement. The bubble wall adds reflective motion, while slow shifts in blues and greens create a soothing rhythm. Children can relax, sit, or sleep without feeling rushed, immersed in calm and quiet exploration.
Light supports calm, safety, and imagination by staying low and indirect, avoiding harsh overhead fixtures. LED elements highlight walls, floors, and the tree structure to guide children and enhance sensory comfort. Subtle transitions and gentle glows help with emotional reset and quiet engagement, creating a safe, inviting environment that encourages stillness, curiosity, and gentle wonder.
